Windsor-Essex County is well known for having reasonable housing costs.

In Ontario there are a few different types of housing that you can choose from. This includes apartments, condominiums, houses, duplex's and rooms. You will need to decide whether you would like to rent or buy. You will want to pick a type of housing that you can afford and one that fits the needs of your family.

If possible, take the time you need to do research and learn about different types of housing before making a decision on what one you would like to go with.

While you are looking for a house you may come across words that you have not seen or heard of before. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has a book of words (Glossaire des termes d'habitation : l'ABC des termes d'habitation) that you can look to if you need further explanation.

People make decisions on where to live based on different factors. You may want to think about the following:

  • Cost of housing and property taxes
  • Distance from work, schools, grocery stores, places of worship, doctor's offices, banks
  • Safety of the neighbourhood
  • Cultural communities
  • Access to highways
  • Waterfront property
  • Access to public transportation: bus, rail and air
  • Distance from the Canada/ United States border crossing
  • Rural (living in a county) vs. Urban (living in a city)

By using websites such as the Windsor Essex County Property Search you can learn more about the area around the housing you are doing research on.
