Getting Connected to Health Care

Contact

It is important that you know about the Ontario Health Care system so that you know how to get health care help for you and your family when you need it.

This information will help you begin to understand what we have available in Windsor-Essex County and how you can access our health care services.

Your Health Card

If you want to get medical treatment, you need to have an "OHIP" card. OHIP stands for "Ontario Health Insurance Plan."

This is a card that you need to apply for as soon as you arrive in Canada. After you apply, there is a 3 month waiting period before your OHIP can be used.

In order to apply for an OHIP card, you will need to fill out the application form and bring it to one of our Service Ontario OHIP offices. This form can be found online or at a Service Ontario OHIP office. There are 3 types of documents you need to bring when you apply for a health card.

Settlement.org has a list of people who are able to get OHIP.

The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care website has more information on how to apply for an OHIP card.

Finding a Doctor

Health Care Connect (Accès Soins) helps you find a doctor.

You are able to register for Health Care Connect if:

  • You do not already have a family doctor
  • You have an active health card
  • Your mailing address is up to date

You can register by phone (call: 1-800-445-1822) or online.

This video will show you how Health Care Connect has worked for other people.

Walk-in Clinics

In Windsor-Essex County we have many walk-in clinics that you can go to if you need medical help. You do not need an appointment to go to a walk-in clinic.

Sometimes it can be hard to know where to go when you need help. Clinic Seeker can help you find the nearest location to help you with your non-emergency medical needs. The name of the health care facility, address, phone and fax number, website (if available), languages spoken and hours of operation are all provided.  Google maps will give you directions to the health care facility of your choice.  Clinic Seeker is currently available for download in the Google Play store for Android based phones and in the App store for Apple products. It is also available on the web at www.clinicseeker.com.

The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (Ministère de la Santé et des Soins de Longue Durée) gives information on the different health care centre options and allows you to search for the service you are looking for. This will tell you where you can find local clinics in our community.
