Eye Care

An optometrist is a doctor who takes care of your vision and the health of your eyes. It is important that you have a regular check up with an optometrist so that you can make sure your eyes are in good health.

If your child is having difficulties seeing in class, it may be affecting how well he or she does in school. If you are having difficulty seeing, far away or up close, you will want to book an appointment with an optometrist. An optometrist can do an eye exam and tell you if glasses are needed for you or your children.

You can search for an optometrist in Windsor-Essex on the Ontario Association of Optometrists’ website.

You can also do a search by language through the College of Optometrists of Ontario.

Children aged 0-19 and people over the age of 65 are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) for one eye exam each year. Adults between the ages of 20-64 are not covered by OHIP. Eye glasses, contact lenses and other recommended actions are not covered by OHIP. Some employers have extended health care coverage that will help in covering these extra costs. You can learn more about coverage from the Ontario Association of Optometrists.

Eye See…Eye Learn

Windsor-Essex has the Eye See…Eye Learn program. This program is offered by specific optometrists in the Windsor-Essex region and is for children in Junior Kindergarten. If the child requires glasses, he or she will receive a free pair of glasses. You will need to ask your optometrist if they offer this program.
