Having a Baby

Contact

Having a baby is exciting, but you may feel like you have a lot to learn about pregnancy and childbirth. There are many services, organizations and resources that can help you during this time of life.

Doctors and Obstetricians

You may want to see a doctor before your pregnancy or once you know that you are pregnant. A doctor can tell you how to take care of yourself and your baby. Your doctor can also refer you to an obstetrician. An obstetrician is a type of doctor who specializes in pregnancy, childbirth and post-natal care.

Midwives

A midwife is a registered health care professional who provides care to women during their pregnancy. Midwives are regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).

A midwife will give care during early pregnancy, labour, birth and post-birth. Midwives are able to admit patients to the hospital. A midwife cannot deliver a baby if you have a high-risk pregnancy.

The cost of midwife services is covered by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

Ontario Midwives has information on midwives and midwifery care.

This map will show you the location of different midwives across Ontario.

Midwives of Windsor and the Midwifery Collective of Essex County provide local midwife care.
