Driver's License

You have to be at least 16 years old and have a valid Ontario driver’s license to drive in Ontario.

If you have a license from another province or country, you must apply for an Ontario driver’s license within 60 days of being here.

Canada has a graduated license system. (en Français) explains how this system works.

A driver’s license includes (your):

  • name
  • address
  • date of birth
  • gender
  • height
  • expiry date of your license
  • type of license
  • codes that show what categories of vehicles you can drive
  • any extra information that you may have
  • picture
  • signature

Your license must be with you at all times while you are driving. It has your picture and your signature on it.

To get your license, you need to go to our Driver Examination Centre. Make sure you bring proper identification with you. When you arrive at the centre, you will need to fill out an application form and pay a fee.

Depending on what country you are coming from you may be able to exchange your license for an Ontario license. If you are not able to exchange your license, you may be able to have fewer tests and wait times.
